When you have teeth that are decaying, broken, or missing, you may have experienced the need to make the decision whether to get dental implants or bridges. Both can be used to replace the damaged or missing tooth, but the decision can be really difficult for you to make. If you have to make this decision, this article should help you figure out what is best for you.

Biggest Differences Between Implants and Bridges

Before getting into the differences between the two, it is best to understand what each type actually is. When you understand what each type is, it will help you make your decision.

What is a bridge?

A dental bridge involves three pieces that provide a complete replacement of the missing tooth. Where the damaged or decayed tooth previously was, the dentist will place two crowns on the outside and then, in between those pieces, the dentist places a false tooth. The three pieces are fused together, usually through a cement-like mixture. All three pieces form the bridge.

What are implants?

A dental implant, on the other hand, is a complete replacement for the tooth and root. It is a seamless design of a root that is placed in the root with a fake tooth attached on top. Once it is implanted and the gums heal around it, it is a complete replacement for both the tooth and the root.

There are two big differences between the two. The first difference is the procedure required to implant each. The dental implant is a much more serious surgery, which requires you to be able to go under in order to get it implanted. While the implantation of the dental bridge is also serious, it does not involve as much. Therefore, in order to get the dental implant you are going to be required to be healthy enough to go through the surgery needed.

The second difference between the two is the design, which can make post-implantation care different (and more difficult in one case). Because the dental implant is one piece while the dental bridge is three pieces, caring for the implant can be much easier than it is for the three pieces.
