Types of Dentures

There are three major types of dentures, and we offer all of them at Acadian Dental, your stop for Houston dentures.

Conventional – These are fully removable dentures that are made to replace all the teeth in your mouth. Conventional dentures require the rest of your teeth to be removed and for your tissue to heal. This typically takes several months.

Conventional dentures are full-size, removable dental appliances that replace all of your upper or lower teeth. They are custom made just for you in a dental lab. To make the dentures, your dentist takes impressions of your mouth before your teeth are removed. If your teeth are already gone, the dentist will make precise measurements to ensure that the dentures fit. You can receive conventional dentures after your gum tissue is fully healed from tooth extractions.

Immediate – Just like conventional dentures, immediate dentures require your remaining teeth to be removed. Unlike conventional dentures, however, they’re inserted the very same day.

Immediate dentures can be placed into your mouth right after tooth extraction surgery. Placing a denture right away helps to preserve your appearance. As your jaws and gums heal, your immediate denture may need to be reshaped or relined.

Overdenture or Partial Dentures – These dentures don’t require all of your teeth to be removed, which is helpful in preserving your original jawbone and providing more support and stability for your dentures.

An overdenture, or partial denture, is like a dental bridge. It consists of some replacement teeth that are attached to a plastic base that’s designed to look like your gum tissue. The plastic base is held together with metal bands. The partial denture slips over the natural teeth that are still in your mouth. These devices use internal attachments to keep them in place rather than permanent bands that are cemented onto your remaining teeth. These devices can help to prevent your remaining teeth from shifting out of their proper positions.

Adjustments

Keeping your mouth happy and healthy often requires you to get denture adjustments. This is normal because your mouth naturally changes as you age, which can affect the way your dentures fit. Ill-fitting dentures can lead to infections and mouth sores. It can also be a source of bad breath because food can easily become trapped under your dentures. Over the course of the day, this can lead to unpleasant odors.

Don’t be forced to hide your smile anymore. At Acadian Dental, we strive to be your number one source for all of your denture needs.
