Tooth grinding, which is also referred to as bruxism, is a condition that many people have without even realizing it. Bruxism is also associated with temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ. People with TMJ often experience jaw pain, popping of the jaws, headaches and tooth pain. At Acadian Family Dental, we offer bruxism and TMJ treatments that may help to relieve your discomfort and protect your oral health.

What causes bruxism and TMJ problems?

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) affect the jaw joints or chewing muscles. Their causes can be complex and are often unclear. Injury and several biological or psychological factors may play a role. Research does not support a bad bite or braces as an established cause of TMD. Teeth grinding or clenching can damage teeth and may occur alongside jaw symptoms, so an examination helps guide care.

Frequently Asked Questions

To diagnose bruxism or TMJ ailments, your dentist will perform an oral exam. Bruxism may cause uneven wear on the surface of your teeth, which the dentist can observe during the exam. Your dentist may ask you to open and close your mouth, move your jaws from left to right or make chewing motions. The dentist may also check your bite to see how your teeth and jaws line up.

Treatment starts with a diagnosis and often uses conservative, reversible approaches. Your clinician may discuss reducing clenching habits, temporarily choosing easier-to-chew foods, guided exercises, or other symptom-management options. Recommendations depend on your medical history and the cause of your discomfort.

A properly fitted night guard may protect teeth from grinding, but it does not guarantee relief from TMD pain. Avoid treatments that permanently change your bite solely to treat TMD without discussing the evidence, risks, and alternatives. Persistent symptoms may require referral.
